Welcome to the e-learning course Human Rights-Based Approach – From Principles to Practice.


Development is not just about meeting needs - it’s about ensuring rights. This course will show you why human rights matter for sustainable development and how they should be used to inform our approach in our work with projects, plans and programmes. 

E-course in two modules

The course consists of two modules - Part 1 and Part 2. Part 1 is for beginners or anyone who wants a refresher. If you already know the basics, you can jump to Part 2 for hands-on application.


In Part 1, you will:

  • Discover what human rights are and why they are essential for development.
  • Explore the link between human rights and sustainability.
  • Understand the global human rights system and its mechanisms.
  • Learn the five principles that make HRBA a practical method.

In Part 2, you will:

  • Analyse real-life development scenarios through an HRBA lens.
  • Apply HRBA across the three phases of any project, program or plan.
  • Reflect on challenges, solutions, and lessons for your own work.
