A Human Rights-Based Approach to Data is a self‑paced e‑learning course that introduces you to six core human rights principles that should guide all work with data: participation, disaggregation, self-identification, privacy and data protection, transparency, and accountability.

The course helps you understand why these principles matter and how to apply them in practice, ensuring that data is used responsibly, ethically, and to promote human rights.

Throughout the course, you will work with a fictional dataset and short case examples that make the principles concrete and easy to apply in your own work.

This e‑learning course consists of 6 lessons, each dedicated to one of the six core principles in a human rights‑based approach to data:

  1. Participation
  2. Disaggregation
  3. Self-identification
  4. Privacy and Data Protection
  5. Transparency
  6. Accountability

Each lesson includes:

  • Introduction to the principle and learning objectives
  • Case and dilemmas
  • Theory and real-life examples
  • Practical data exercises in Excel
  • Checklists, FAQ and self-evaluation

Estimated duration:

  • Without exercises: approx. 3.5–4.5 hours total
Individual lessons range from approx. 35 to 100 minutes depending on whether exercises are completed.
