  • Welcome to Human Rights in Small-Scale Fisheries

As you heard in the video human rights have quite much to do with small-scale fisheries.

Across the world, millions of people depend on small-scale fisheries for food, income, culture, and identity. Yet these communities are increasingly affected by environmental change, development projects, conservation measures, and unequal access to decision-making. This course explores these challenges through a human rights lens and shows why they matter for anyone working with human rights, environmental governance, or sustainable development.

    A flexible learning experience

This course consists of 8 independent modules that can be completed in any order. You can follow the full learning journey or select the topics most relevant to your interests, role, or professional needs.

The modules cover themes such as:

    • Access to fisheries resources, land, and a healthy environment
    • Women's rights and gender equality
    • Participation, access to information, and access to justice
    • Livelihoods, food security, and social protection
    • Emerging environmental and economic policy agendas
    • Practical entry points for human rights action

Through real-life examples, dilemmas, and practical reflections, you will explore how human rights shape the everyday realities of small-scale fishing communities and discover how human rights actors can help protect and promote these rights.
