Artificial intelligence (AI) is shaping how people live, learn and connect. From improving healthcare and education to enabling new forms of expression and access to information, AI opens new possibilities. However, it can also create, reinforce or amplify risks, including to human rights.

This series of six microlearnings introduces a Human Rights-Based Approach to AI through the PANEL principles: Participation, Accountability, Non-discrimination and Equality, Empowerment, and Legality.

Each microlearning presents a practical dilemma and uses one PANEL principle to help identify human rights risks, ask relevant questions and guide responsible action. Together, the series explores what states, companies and other actors can do to place rights-holders at the centre of AI design, development, deployment, use and decommissioning, especially for children and young people.

In practice, the PANEL principles are interdependent and interconnected. The microlearnings examine them separately to provide an accessible introduction to their application. You can complete the series in sequence or explore one or more individual microlearnings according to your interests.
