A National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (NAP) is an “evolving policy strategy developed by a State to protect against adverse human rights impacts by business enterprises in conformity with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs).” [UN Business and Human Rights Working Group definition]
As of January 2026, over 40 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America had adopted a NAP, and number of other countries are developing them.
This course introduces the role of NAPs and how they can be used as a tool to realise responsible business conduct. It presents how to plan inclusive and participatory NAP development and implementation processes. Through a mix of multimedia content, interactive activities, and case studies, the course guides you step-by-step through the NAP lifecycle, highlights good practice examples, challenges faced, and lessons learned at each stage. At strategic points, you will encounter practical activities and downloadable tools designed to help you apply and tailor what you’ve learned to your own context.
Whether you work in government, a civil society organisation, business, trade union, national human rights institution, or are a member of a rights-holder group, this course will equip you with the knowledge and tools to actively drive and engage in NAP processes to advance business respect for human rights.
The course is designed to take around 5 hours to complete (plus additional time for optional activities).
